Work will start in April on a long-awaited bridge linking downtown Yangon with Dala, a state-run newspaper reported on January 12 without giving a source for the information.
A ground-breaking ceremony was expected to be held in late March for the Korea-Myanmar Friendship Bridge over the Yangon River, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported.
It said the four-lane, cable-stayed bridge estimated to cost US$168.17 million and being built with financial support from South Korea, was due to open in the 2020-21 fiscal year.
The bridge will be 1,936-feet (590-metres) long and 87 feet (26.5m) wide and link Phone Gyi Street in Lanmadaw Township with Bo Min Yaung Street in Dala. The bridge will be 320 feet (97.5m) high, to allow big ships to pass underneath.
South Korea’s overseas aid agency, the Korea Economic Development Cooperation Fund, will provide a $137.83 million loan towards the cost of the bridge and the Union government will fund the remaining $30.34 million, GNLM said.
