Many workers brought to criminal hubs in Southeast Asia have no idea what they’re getting themselves into, but some are seeking a payday despite the risks. Frontier spoke to two workers – one in online gambling the other in online scams – about their daily lives, working conditions and what brought them to Shwe Kokko.

Outspoken former Yangon Region lawmaker Daw Nyo Nyo Thin has opened a school for those who want to become involved in politics. Launching the School of Law, Gender & Politics in Yangon on August 6, Nyo Nyo Thin said it was aimed at meeting a need for professional politicians and administrators in government. The anti-corruption crusader won a seat in the Yangon regional assembly for the Democratic Party in 2010 but lost to the National League for Democracy when she stood as an independent for the Pyithu Hluttaw seat of Bahan Township in 2015. She spoke to Frontier’s Su Myat Mon.
Diarrhoea is one of the leading causes of child death globally, and rotavirus is the most common cause of diarrhoea mortality. In Myanmar, the disease accounts for more than half of all diarrhoea cases. Dr Mathuram Santosham, a specialist who has spent more than 40 years working on the illness, speaks to Frontier’s Oliver Slow about the need for access to vaccinations to help prevent children from catching the illness.
