Six years ago over 700,000 Rohingya fled from vicious military attacks in Rakhine state. But this was only the latest and worst episode in decades of discrimination and violence against the Rohingya, which still continues in Myanmar.
For those who remain in Rakhine state, their rights and movements are severely restricted. Hundreds have been arrested inside Myanmar in the last few years just for daring to travel and trying to escape to a better life.
Wai Wai Nu is a well-known Rohingya activist and founder of the Women’s Peace Network. When she spoke to Doh Athan on this tragic anniversary, she said people need to address these past and current wrongs in order to work together for a future truly democratic state.
Doh Athan is a weekly podcast about human rights issues in Myanmar. It is made by local journalists with media partners from across the country, through a partnership with Fondation Hirondelle and the support of our donors.
