Government allows foreign firms to import agro products

YANGON — The Ministry of Commerce has allowed foreign joint-venture companies to import fertilizers, seeds, pesticides and clinical instruments, in keeping with World Trade Organization requirements, local media reported Wednesday.

A statement signed by the Commerce Minister U Win Myint on November 11 said that the government had allowed foreign ventures with Myanmar partners to import the four items in keeping with international trade norms.

Previously only Myanmar companies could import the products, deemed crucial to Myanmar agriculture and medical sectors.

“The decision was based on the country’s needs and was aimed at trade sector development,” said the ministry statement, which was only made available to local media on Wednesday.

The ministry said the relaxation on the imported items would support development of the country’s agriculture and public health sectors’ development.
