City Mart celebrates 20th anniversary at new Yangon branch

City Mart Holding Co Ltd, Myanmar’s largest retailer, has marked its 20th anniversary at its newly opened Marketplace supermarket in Yangon.

City Mart celebrated the anniversary with a customer appreciation night held under the theme of “bringing smiles to millions in Myanmar” at the new branch, at 6.5 mile on Pyay Road on September 9, the company said in a news release.

The new branch is the fourth marketplace by City Mart supermarket.

As well as customers, the event was attended by VIPs, A-list celebrities and members of the media, who enjoyed a scrumptious buffet dinner, it said.

The celebrities included Phway Phway, Awn Seng, M Seng Lu, Hlwan Paing, Bobby Soxer and Ariel Thuta.

“The main reason of our existence in the past 20 years is our customers, employees and our business partners who have supportively held our hands as we journeyed through good and bad times,” City Mart chief executive Daw Win Win Tint said at the opening ceremony.

City Mart began with a supermarket at Aung San Stadium and has grown to 180 branches throughout the country, with more planned, the release said.

As well as supermarkets, its retail outlets include hypermarkets, convenience stores, bookstores, health and beauty stores, baby and maternity specialty stores, as well as a café and bakery.

The company had achieved steady growth despite being “in a challenging environment and economy”, the release said.

The occasion was also marked by the unveiling of City Mart’s corporate social responsibility activities, under its City Hope & Love Foundation.

The activities, based at the 6.5 mile branch, will include a collection centre where customers can leave second-hand clothing in good condition for distribution to the Eden Centre for Disabled Children and other charities.

There will also be two kiosks for social enterprises that have a positive impact on Myanmar and its people, an artists’ corner where works by Myanmar artists will be sold to support the Eden school and other charities, and a weekend bazaar, the release said.
