Thailand’s biggest private hospital, Bumrungrad International, plans to open its first clinic in Yangon by the middle of 2016, the Bangkok Post reported on November 1.
The primary care and diagnostic clinic near the Thai embassy would be Bumrungrad’s first investment in another member country of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the English-language daily reported.
Bumrungrad International Hospital would own 80 percent of Bumrungrad Myanmar Co., with the remaining share to be held by domestic partner, Yangon International Medical Services. The company was granted approval by the Myanmar Investment Commission to open a clinic in Yangon last month.
Bumrungrad’s corporate director of marketing and business development, Sudi Narasimhan, said the standalone clinic would open in the middle of next year, but he did not specify how much was being invested in the project, the Bangkok Post reported.
Bumrungrad International, situated in central Bangkok, is one of the world’s leading medical tourism destinations and one of the largest hospitals in Southeast Asia and treats about 1.1 million patients a year, of whom about half are foreigners.

Myanmar citizens account for the largest number of non-Thai patients at the hospital, which has long had a representative office in Yangon, the Bangkok Post said.
The clinic will initially have two or three non-local doctors, trained at Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok, treating non-complicated diseases and providing diagnostic services, the report said.
Bumrungrad will become the latest of the big hospitals in Thailand to open a clinic in Yangon. The others include Samitivej, which has operated a clinic at Parami General Hospital for more than a year.
