The process of obtaining a new passport has become more difficult and time-consuming since authorities demanded applicants submit digitised personal data. For some ethnic and religious groups it’s now virtually impossible to get new identity documents. Activists warn that a widening of the junta’s digitisation project could further entrench discrimination.
