Deepening poverty and increased demand for scrap materials are driving ever more people, including children, to scavenge for rubbish in Myanmar’s cities, but worsening power cuts are creating recycling bottlenecks.
Thefts and robberies, often violent, have skyrocketed in Myanmar’s commercial capital since the February 2021 coup, with residents setting up night patrols in some areas as police do little to stop the surge in crime.
